Lake County Affordable Housing Commission

One of AHC's important roles in the community is to staff and administer the Lake County Affordable Housing Commission. This group is a commission of the Lake County Board, but is set up as a public-private partnership in order to foster the creation and preservation of more affordable housing in the County.

Mission
The Affordable Housing Commission serves to provide an expert resource for Lake County on affordable housing issues, and to promote policies, strategies and programs that increase and preserve affordable housing.

History & Purpose
In 1991, the Lake County Board created a special task force called the Affordable Housing Commission to study the then-emerging affordable housing crisis. Their purpose was to study the issue and its impact, make projections and identify solutions. Through their initial efforts, the County as a whole was better able to understand this complex issue and identify key programming strategies to increase the availability of affordable housing. This task force was eventually authorized by special resolution to become a committee of the County Board, and today it serves the following purposes.

  • To advocate for the increase of affordable housing throughout Lake County by educating the general public, elected and appointed officials, housing providers, and other interest groups regarding affordable housing issues.
  • To support, develop and promote programs, policies and resources that serve to further the availability of affordable housing county-wide.
  • To provide an expert resource on affordable housing for Lake County.
  • To work in concert with a companion 501c3 nonprofit agency (i.e., the Affordable Housing Corporation) that will exist to implement the purpose and goals of the Commission, as well as to provide other affordable housing programming.
